Essentially there are three main ways to shingle a roof valley.

Cut corners and apply cement dub cut the top layer shingles see step 4 in open metal valley above. Use a nail bar to loosen the shingles in the affected area insert the bar under a shingle and pry upward at a the location of each nail to loosen a nail.
